Did You Know...?
- Evangelical Christians account for less than 0.5% of the population of Japan
- 75% of Japanese say they do not really believe in any religion
- There are only 2.1 people per 1,000 who attend a worship service
- There are many family and
cultural pressures to conform in this group-oriented society, making it
difficult to stand up for their faith
- From 2003 to 2005, the number of baptisms in Japan decreased by 17%
- There is one Japanese suicide every 15 minutes
- 84% to 96% of Japanese loosely adhere to Shinto, Buddhism & ancestor worship
- Churches anticipate a large shortage of Christian pastors in the near future, as many post-war pastors have reached retirement age
- Of full-time ministers in Japan, 40% are over 60, and close to 70% are over 50
- There are not enough younger pastors to fill these vacant spots. Pray the Lord of the
Harvest will raise up new workers
- Most churches are struggling to find ways to reach youth and men
- There are approximately 2,000 protestant missionaries serving Japan, and many more who come for short term missions
